Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair

Parking Brake Cable Replacement

NOTE: The parking brake cable must not be bent or distorted. This will lead to stiff operation and premature cable failure. Refer to the Exploded View as needed during this procedure.

1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is properly supported. Remove the rear wheel.

2. Remove the ABS sensor harness bracket (A) from the rear knuckle. Do not disconnect the wheel sensor connector.
3. Remove the lower damper mounting bolt (B).

4. Remove the parking brake cable (A) from the trailing arm (B).
5. Remove the rear brake caliper, remove the rear brake disc/drum and hub.
6. Remove the parking brake shoes from the backing plate and disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever (see step 8).
7. Remove the 16 mm and 10 mm backing plate mounting nuts in back of the rear knuckle.

8. Separate the backing plate (A) from the rear knuckle (B).

9. Remove the parking brake cable mounting bolts from the backing plate (A), and remove the cable (B).
10. Reinstall the parking brake cable in reverse order of removal, and note these items:
- Tighten all mounting hardware to the specified torque values.
- Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surfaces on the brake disc and inside of the wheel.
- Adjust the parking brake.
- Check the rear wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary.
