Starter Motor: Service and Repair
Starter, Removing and Installing
CAUTION!
Before working on the electrical system:
- Determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
NOTE: After reconnecting the battery be sure to reactivate the radio, clock, power windows and engine.
Work sequence:
Removing:
NOTE: Remove the generator before removing the starter.
- Remove sound dampening.
- Remove air intake duct between air cleaner and mass air flow sensor.
- Remove intake air ducts between air cleaner housing and lock carrier.
- Remove bolts -arrows- from air shroud and coolant fan. Remove coolant fan without disconnecting and lay aside.
- Remove cover from suspension strut connection and air cleaner housing.
- Install 10 - 222A engine support bridge with 10 - 222A/4 adapter for engine support -arrow D- to bolts of suspension strut connection.
NOTE:
- The threaded spindle -B- must point toward the front and the threaded spindle -C- must point toward the rear.
- Do not use 10 - 222A/1 bracket for engine.
- Disconnect fuel line from fuel pressure regulator -arrow-.
- Insert 3180 retainer from transmission side into support eye of engine and tighten.
- Insert 10 - 222A/2 hooks -A- into support eye at fuel pressure regulator.
- Slightly pre-tension engine with both spindles -B- and -C-.
- Be sure when lifting and lowering engine that hook -B- or auxiliary hook -A- do not come in contact with fuel pressure regulator -arrow-.
- Remove lower bolts -arrows- at engine mounts.
- Remove bolts -arrows- at right front torque support.
- Using spindles, lift engine until engine mount protrudes from engine/transmission carrier.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the damping mat on the side panel with the throttle valve unit.
- Remove right engine mount and wiring clamps -arrows-. Position engine mount on engine/transmission carrier.
- Disconnect wiring from terminal B+ -1-.
Tightening torque: 16 Nm (12 ft lb)
- Disconnect electrical connector for terminal 50 -2-.
- From engine side remove lower bolt for starter -1-.
Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ft lb)
- From transmission side remove upper bolt for starter -1-.
Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ft lb)
- Remove socket bolt -2-.
