Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection

Testing Ignition Coil Assembly:

RESISTANCE VALUES
1. Measure between C+ terminal (Refer to accompanying image for ignition coil connector pinouts) and ignition coil assembly frame.

^ Using the high scale, the ohmmeter should read infinity. If not, replace coil assembly (4) (Refer to accompanying image for numbered references).

2. Measure between C+ and C- terminals using an ohmmeter and J35616.

NOTE: GM special tool, J35616, is a terminal test adapter kit.

^ Using the low scale, the ohmmeter should read between 0.3 and 0.5 ohms. If not, replace coil assembly (4).

3. Measure between C+ terminal and secondary output tower, using an ohmmeter and J35616.

^ Using the high scale, ohmmeter should read between 7000 and 9000 ohms. If ohmmeter reads infinity, replace coil assembly (4).
