Fuel Pressure Regulator: Service and Repair

TOOLS REQUIRED

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

NOTE: Do not use compressed air to test or clean a fuel pressure regulator. Excessive air pressure can damage the fuel pressure regulator.

Do not immerse the fuel pressure regulator in a cleaning solvent in order to prevent damage to the regulator.

IMPORTANT: Always maintain cleanliness when servicing fuel system components.




1. Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure. Service and Repair
2. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator retaining ring.
3. Remove the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator.




4. Remove the retainer clip from the fuel pressure regulator (6).
5. Lift and twist the fuel pressure regulator in order to remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel pressure regulator housing using a shop towel to catch any spilled fuel.
6. Remove the regulator seal lower O-ring (2).
7. Remove the regulator assembly filter (3).
8. Remove the regulator seal upper O-ring (4).
9. Remove the regulator seal back-up ring (5).
10. Cover the fuel pressure regulator housing to prevent contamination from entering the fuel system.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTE:
^ Do not use compressed air in order to test or clean a fuel pressure regulator as damage to the fuel pressure regulator may result.
^ Clean the fuel pressure regulator filter screen with gasoline it necessary.
^ Do not immerse the fuel pressure regulator in a solvent bath in order to prevent damage to the fuel pressure regulator.




1. Install the new O-ring on the fuel pressure regulator, if a new fuel pressure regulator is not being installed. Lubricate the O-ring lightly with clean engine oil.
2. Install the regulator seal lower O-ring (2).
3. Install the regulator assembly filter (3).
4. Install the regulator seal upper O-ring (4).
5. Install the regulator seal back-up ring (5).
6. Install the retainer clip to the fuel pressure regulator (6).




7. Install the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator.
8. Install the negative battery cable.
9. Inspect for leaks.
9.1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
9.2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
9.3. Turn ON the ignition.
9.4. Visually inspect the fuel system for fuel leaks.
10. Install the rear seat cushion.




11. Install the fuel injector sight shield (1) to the engine.
12. Install the fuel injector sight shield nuts (2).

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 3 N.m (27 lb in).
