Subject: SHIFTER BUZZ NOISE - 1982 CAMARO WITH FOUR-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION

MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLOOR SHIFT CONTROL:

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

Some 1982 Camaros equipped with manual transmission may exhibit an objectionable shifter buzz noise, especially when operating under higher RPM conditions. To eliminate the buzz noise, a new shifter isolater, P/N 14071817, of new material and durometer is required. With reference to the attached illustration, the following repair procedure is recommended:
1. Remove shifter knob, console trim plate assembly (including upper shift boot), and lower shift boot.

2. By pulling upward, disengage upper shift lever from isolator's internal retainer tabs and remove lever from shifter assembly.

3. Remove original isolator (black) from shifter assembly by gripping with needle nose pliers and pulling upward while twisting to unseat isolator's external retainer tabs.

4. Insert new isolator (green), P/N 14071817, into shifter assembly until it fully seats and its external retainer tabs engage holes in shifter assembly.

5. Enlarge hole in upper shift lever by drilling to 8.00 +/- .05 mm diameter to accommodate larger internal retainer tabs on new isolator.

6. By pushing downward, reinstall modified upper shift lever into modified shifter assembly. Insure proper lever engagement with isolator's internal retainer tabs by lifting upward.

7. Reinstall previously removed shifter boots, console trim plate and shifter knob.
