Removal and Replacement
TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONTools Required:
^ J 28467 Engine Support Fixture
^ J 35953 Adapter
^ J 34754 Drive Axle Seal Protectors
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner assembly and air intake duct.
3. T.V. cable throttle lever and transaxle.
4. Fluid level indicator and fill tube.
5. Install J 28467 engine support fixture with adapter J 35953.
6. Nut securing wiring harness to transaxle
7. Wiring connectors at:
^ Speed sensor
^ TCC connector
^ Park/Neutral and backup lamp switch.
8. Shift linkage from transaxle.
9. Top two transaxle to engine bolts and transaxle mount and bracket assembly.
10. Rubber hose from transaxle to vent pipe.
11. Remaining upper engine to transaxle bolts.
12. Raise car and suitably support.
13. Both front wheel and tires.
14. Shift linkage and bracket from transaxle.
15. Install drive axle seal protectors.
NOTICE: Drive axle seal protector J 34754 should be modified and installed on any drive axle prior to service procedures on or near the drive axle. Failure to observe this can result in seal damage and possible joint failure. Refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints for information on tool J 34754 and for proper drive axle removal and handling procedures.
16. LH splash shield.
17. Disengage both drive axles.
18. Transaxle strut.
19. Left stabilizer shaft link pin bolt.
20. Left stabilizer shaft bushing clamp nuts at support.
21. Left frame support bolts and swing aside.
22. Speedometer wire connector to transaxle.
23. Transaxle converter cover.
24. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.
^ Using a scribe, mark the flywheel to torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly.
25. Transaxle cooler pipes. Plug to prevent leakage.
26. Transaxle to engine support bracket.
27. Position transaxle jack.
28. Remaining engine to transaxle bolts.
29. Transaxle.
INSPECT
^ For inspection and overhaul procedures, refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.
CLEAN
- Transaxle oil cooler and lines should be flushed with J 35944 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement of the torque converter, pump or case. Follow the tool manufacturer instructions for flushing the oil cooler and lines.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Place a small wipe of light grease on the torque converter pilot hub.
^ Make sure to properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.
2. Position transaxle in car.
IMPORTANT
- Guide the RH drive axle shaft into its bore as the transaxle is being raised. The RH shaft cannot be readily installed after the transaxle is bolted to the engine.
3. Lower transaxle to engine bolts. Remove transaxle jack.
4. Transaxle to engine support bracket.
5. Transaxle cooler pipes.
6. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.
- 62 N.m (46 lbs. ft.). Re-torque the first bolt after all three have been tightened.
7. Transaxle converter cover.
8. Speedometer wire connector.
9. Position LH drive axle shaft into the transaxle.
10. Left frame support assembly.
11. Left stabilizer shaft frame bushing nuts.
12. Stabilizer bar link pin bolt.
13. Transaxle strut.
14. Seat drive axles in transaxle.
15. Remove drive axle seal protectors.
16. Splash shield.
17. Shift linkage bracket to transaxle.
18. Both wheel and tire assemblies.
19. Lower car.
20. Upper engine to transaxle bolts.
21. Transaxle mount bolts.
22. Shift linkage to transaxle.
23. Wiring connectors at:
^ Speed sensor.
^ TCC connector.
^ Park/Neutral and backup lamp switch.
24. Wiring harness and nut securing it to transaxle.
25. Remove Engine Support Fixture.
26. Fluid level indicator and fill tube.
27. T.V. cable at transaxle and throttle lever.
28. Rubber hoses to transaxle vent pipe.
29. Air cleaner assembly and air intake duct.
30. Negative battery cable.
31. Transaxle fluid.
INSPECT
^ T.V. cable adjustment.
^ Shift linkage adjustment.
^ For proper oil level.
^ For oil leaks.
