Fuel Pressure Release: Service and Repair

CHECK TYPE SYSTEM

Some models are equipped with TBI units that hold fuel pump pressure when the engine is not operating. These require a fuel pressure relief procedure prior to servicing the fuel system.
1. Relieve system fuel pressure as follows:
a. Remove fuel pump fuse from fuse block.
b. Start engine and allow to run until fuel supply remaining in pipes is consumed, then crank starter an additional 3 seconds to relieve remaining pressure.
c. With ignition switch in Off position, install fuse.

NON-CHECK TYPE SYSTEM

Some models are equipped with TBI units that are non-checking systems.
1. Relieve system fuel pressure as follows:
a. Disconnect battery ground cable to ensure no attempt is made to start vehicle.
b. Loosen fuel filler cap to relieve tank vapor pressure.
c. The internal constant bleed feature relieves fuel pump system pressure when the engine is in the Off position, ensuring no further fuel pressure relief system is required.
