Fuel Rail: Service and Repair

CAUTION: Before removal, the fuel rail assembly may be cleaned with a spray type engine cleaner, GM X-30A or equivalent, following package instructions. Do not soak fuel rails in liquid cleaning solvents.

Fuel Rail Assembly Identification:




Fuel System:





NOTE: An eight digit identification number is stamped on the fuel rail assembly. Refer to this model identification number if servicing or part replacement is required.

Remove and Disconnect:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable
2. Relieve fuel system pressure
3. Remove fuel rail cover
4. Disconnect quick connect fittings at fuel rail feed and return pipes.
a. Grasp both ends of one fuel pipe connection and twist 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen dirt in quick connect fitting. Repeat for other fitting.
b. Choose correct tool from J37088-A tool set for size of fitting.
c. Insert tool into female connector, then push inward to release male connector
d. Repeat for other fitting
5. Disconnect vacuum line at pressure regulator
6. Disconnect injector electrical connectors
7. Remove fuel rail attaching bolts
8. Remove fuel rail assembly

WARNING: Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air.

Cleaning
^ Using compressed air, blow out dirt from quick connect fittings.

Disassemble
^. Remove injector O-ring seal from spray tip end of each injector. Discard O-rings.

Assemble
^. Lubricate new injector O-ring seals and install on spray tip end of each injector.

Install or Connect:
1. Install fuel rail assembly in intake manifold
2. Install and tighten fuel rail attaching bolts
Torque Value: 20 N-m (15 lb.ft.)
3. Rotate fuel injectors to avoid stretching wire harness and connect electrical connectors
4. Apply a few drops of new oil to male connector tube on fuel rail
5. Connect quick connect fittings at fuel rail
6. Tighten fuel filler cap
7. Connect negative battery cable

Inspect:
Turn ignition switch to "ON" position for two seconds, then turn to "OFF" for ten seconds. Again turn to "ON" position and check for fuel leaks.
