Water Pump: Service and Repair

NOTICE: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL(TM) coolant. If the coolant other than DEX-COOL(TM) is added to the system, the engine coolant will require change sooner - at 50,000 km (30,000 miles) or 24 months.

Remove or Disconnect

1. Negative battery cable.
2. Drain and recover the cooling system.
3. Loosen coolant pump pulley bolts.
4. Drive belt.
5. Water pump pulley attaching bolts, then remove the pulley.
6. Coolant surge tank hose.
7. Water pump attaching bolts, then remove the pump.

Clean
^ Sealing surfaces completely.

Install or Connect

1. Using a new gasket, install the pump.

Tighten
^ Bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)

2. Water pump pulley to pump.

Tighten
^ Bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)

3. Drive belt.
4. Fill the cooling system.
5. Negative battery cable.

Inspect
^ For leaks.
