Parking Lock Cable: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURECAUTION: Disconnect the negative battery cable under the following circumstances:
- When installing an electrical unit.
- When a tool or equipment could easily come into contact with "live" exposed electrical terminals.
Failure to disconnect the negative battery terminal may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle's components. Turn OFF the vehicle ignition, unless instructed otherwise.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the console.
3. Remove the I/P accessory trim plate.
4. Remove the driver knee bolster trim panel.
5. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn to the RUN position. (Be sure the shifter is in PARK.)
6. Using a flat bladed screwdriver or other suitable tool, depress the park/lock control cable retaining tab (located on the underside of the ignition switch near the base of the cable).
7. While still depressing the park/lock cable retaining tab, pull to release the cable from the ignition switch.
8. Using a flat bladed screwdriver or other suitable tool, release the tab retaining the park/lock cable to the slot on the shift control.
9. Lift the park/lock cable out of the shift control slot and reposition the cable.
10. Grasp the cable end and pull rearward in order to unlock the cable from the shifter pivot arm stud.
Important: Take note of the park/lock cable routing through the I/P center support bracket to aid in reinstallation.
11. Remove the park/lock control cable.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Route and position the park/lock cable through the I/P center support bracket as noted during removal. Be sure to route the cable under the wiring harness and above the floor rear outlet duct as shown.
2. Install the park/lock cable to the ignition switch. Insert the cable into the ignition switch slot, then push in to lock the retaining tab.
3. Install the park/lock cable to the shift control pivot arm stud. Align the cable onto the arm stud then pull forward to lock.
4. Insert the cable into the slot on the shift control. Be sure the cable retaining tab locks in place.
5. Install the driver knee bolster trim panel.
6. Install the I/P accessory trim plate.
7. Install the console.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the cable bolt to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Inspect the functional operation of the park/lock system:
1. Place the shift lever in PARK.
2. Turn the ignition to LOCK.
3. Replace the park/lock control cable if the following situations occur:
- The shift lever can be moved to another position.
- The ignition key cannot be removed.
4. Turn the ignition to RUN.
5. Place the shift lever in NEUTRAL.
6. Replace the park/lock control cable if the ignition can be turned to Lock.
If these conditions are met, the park/lock system is functioning properly.
