Ignition Coil: Service and Repair
Ignition Coil(S) ReplacementREMOVAL PROCEDURE
TOOLS REQUIRED
J 36011 Spark Plug Removal Tool.
CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the accelerator and cruise control cables out of the hold down clip.
3. Remove the fuel line retainer clip bolt.
4. Disconnect the Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness electrical connector.
5. Remove the Ignition Coil and the Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) assembly to camshaft housing bolts.
NOTE: Spark plug boots often adhere to the spark plugs. Use tool J 36011 in order to remove by first twisting and then pulling upward on retainers. Reinstall the boots and the retainers on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals. The boots and the retainers must be in place on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals prior to the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly installation or ignition control system damage may result.
6. Remove the Ignition Coil and Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) assembly from the engine.
7. Remove the housing to cover screws.
8. Disconnect the coil harness electrical connector from the Ignition Control Module.
IMPORTANT: When removing the housing from the cover make sure the ground strap stays in place.
9. Remove the housing from the cover.
10. Remove the Ignition Coil(s) from the housing.
11. Disconnect the Ignition Coil(s) electrical connector.
12. Remove the contact springs from the housing.
13. Remove the Ignition Coil seal(s) from the Ignition Coil(s).
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the Ignition Coil seal(s) into the Ignition Coil(s) (replace with new seals).
2. Install the contact springs into the housing (use petroleum jelly to retain).
3. Connect the Ignition Coil(s) electrical connector.
4. Install the Ignition Coil(s) into the housing.
5. Install the ground strap (if the ground strap is not already installed).
6. Connect the Ignition Coil(s) electrical connector to the Ignition Control Module.
IMPORTANT: When installing the housing to the cover make sure the ground strap stays in place.
7. Install the housing to the cover.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
8. lnstall the housing to cover screws.
Tighten
Tighten the housing to cover screws 4 N.m (35 lb in).
9. Install the spark plug boots and the retainers to the housing (if the spark plug boot and retainer is not already installed).
10. Install the Ignition Coil and Electronic Ignition Control Module assembly to the engine while carefully aligning the spark boots to the spark plug terminals.
IMPORTANT: The ICM cover bolts must be installed with isolator washers with the rubber side facing down.
11. Install the Ignition Coil and the Electronic Ignition Control Module assembly to camshaft housing bolts after coating the threads with Sealant LOCTITE GM 12346004 or equivalent.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
12. Connect the Electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness electrical connector.
13. Install the fuel line retainer clip bolt.
14. Install the accelerator and cruise control cables into the hold down clip.
15. Connect the negative battery cable.
