Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J28467-A Engine Support Fixture
- J28467-90 Engine Support Adapter
- J36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set
- J35944-A Oil Cooler and Line Flusher

1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Powertrain Management.





3. Install the J28467-90.
4. Install the J28467-A.
5. Install the J36462.
6. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right) in Engine.
7. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transaxle and remove the wiring harness grounds.
8. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (at PNP Switch).
9. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable from transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
10. Remove the PNP switch. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (at PNP Switch).
11. Remove the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
12. Remove the power steering gear to frame retaining bolts. Refer to Steering and Suspension.
13. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
14. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
15. Remove the front tires and wheels.
16. Remove the engine splash shields.
17. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle with Strut Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
18. Remove the power steering gear from the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
19. Use wire to secure the power steering gear to the vehicle.
20. Remove the power steering cooler line clamps from the frame. Refer to Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
21. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine.
22. Remove the lower ball joints from the lower control arms. Refer to Steering Knuckle with Strut Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
23. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
24. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.





25. Remove the torque converter bolts.
26. Drain the transaxle fluid.
27. Remove the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.
28. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
29. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle and struts.
30. Disconnect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Front) in Brakes and Traction Control.
31. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
32. Use the transaxle table to support the transaxle.
33. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement.





34. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
35. With assistance remove the frame to body bolts and lower the frame from the vehicle.
36. Lower the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Unit Repair.
37. Refer to Transmission Unit Repair for the inspection procedure and for the overhaul procedure.
38. Use the J35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
^ Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing.

Installation Procedure

- J28467-90 Engine Support Adapter
- J36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set

1. Raise the transaxle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





2. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
Tighten the lower transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement.
4. Install the frame to body bolts.
5. Remove the transaxle table.
6. Connect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
7. Connect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Front) in Powertrain Management.
8. Connect the drive axles to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
9. Install the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.





10. Install the torque converter bolts.
Tighten the torque converter bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
12. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
13. Install the lower ball joints to the lower control arms. Refer to Steering Knuckle with Strut Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
14. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine.
15. Install the power steering cooler line clamps to the frame. Refer to Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
16. Install the power steering gear to the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
17. Install both the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle with Strut Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
18. Install the engine splash shields.
19. Install the front tires and wheels.
20. Install the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
21. Lower the vehicle.





22. Install the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2). and install the wiring harness grounds.
Tighten the upper transaxle bolts and stud to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
23. Install the PNP switch. Refer to PNP Switch Replacement.
24. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable to transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
25. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (at PNP Switch).
26. Install the wiring harness connectors to the transaxle.
27. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right) in Engine.
28. Remove the J36462.
29. Remove the J28467-A.
30. Remove the J28467-90.
31. Install the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Powertrain Management.
32. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.

Notice: Do NOT overfill the transaxle. The overfilling of the transaxle causes foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints, and possible damage to the transaxle.

33. Adjust the fluid level.
34. Use the J35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
^ Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing.

35. Inspect for proper completion of the repairs.
36. Inspect for fluid leaks.
