Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure1. Remove the valve rocker arm cover(s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Left) and/or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Right).
2. Remove the valve rocker arm bolt(s).
Important: Place the parts on a clean surface. Store the components in order so they can be reassembled in the same location and with the same mating surfaces as when removed.
3. Remove the valve rocker arm(s).
4. Remove the valve rocker arm guide plate if all of the rocker arms are removed.
5. Remove the push rod(s).
6. Clean the push rod(s), the valve rocker arm(s), the bolt(s), and the guide plate(s) in a suitable solution.
7. Clean the valve rocker arm bolt(s) of all thread adhesive.
Installation Procedure
- Tools Required
- J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter
1. Use compressed air in order to blow oil out of the tapped holes in the cylinder head.
2. Lubricate the ends of the push rod(s) with new engine oil. Install the push rod(s) to the same position the push rod(s) was removed from.
3. Install the valve rocker arm guide plate(s).
4. Install the valve rocker arm(s).
Notice: This bolt is designed to permanently stretch when tightened. The correct part number fastener must be used to replace this type of fastener. Do not use a bolt that is stronger in this application. If the correct bolt is not used, the parts will not be tightened correctly. The system or the components may be damaged.
5. Apply GM P/N 12345493 threadlock or equivalent to the rocker arm pedestal retaining bolt threads
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
6. Install the rocker arm pedestal retaining bolt(s).
Tighten the rocker arm bolt(s) to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). Use the J 36660-A in order to rotate the bolts an additional 90 degrees.
7. Install the valve rocker arm cover(s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Left) and/or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Right).
8. Inspect the valve train for noise.
