Pinion Flange: Service and Repair
Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (Oil Seal)

Removal Procedure
Danger:
To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.
Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning Safety Glasses Warning.
1. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. Remove the intermediate exhaust assembly. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement Service and Repair.
3. Disconnect the propeller shaft and rubber coupling from the differential flange. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60) Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60).
4. Remove the differential pinion flange. Refer to Rear Axle Disassemble Rear Axle Disassemble.
Note: Be careful with the sealing surfaces when removing the pinion flange oil seal (1). Prevent lubricant leakage from the assembly.
Note: The pinion flange oil seal (1) is a single use part and must be discarded after use.
5. Use E-308 - seal remover to remove the pinion flange oil seal (1) from the differential (2).
Discard the pinion flange oil seal.
Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the NEW pinion flange oil seal (1) with the correct grease. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers Specifications.
Note: Be careful with any sealing surfaces when fitting the pinion flange oil seal. Prevent lubricant leakage from the assembly.
Note: Use DT-48727 - seal installer to obtain correct seal depth.
2. Install the NEW pinion flange oil seal (1) to the differential (2) with DT-48727 - seal installer.
3. Install the pinion flange. Refer to Rear Axle Assemble Rear Axle Assemble.
4. Connect the propeller shaft and rubber coupling to the differential flange. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60) Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60).
5. Install the intermediate exhaust assembly. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement Service and Repair.
6. Check differential fluid. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Level Inspection Procedures.
7. Remove safety stands.
8. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
