Bearing Installation

FIGURE 2 - FRONT WHEEL BEARING ASSEMBLY:

1. Thoroughly clean hub (6) (Fig. 2) and bearing carrier (10) (Fig. 2) with mineral spirits. Dry using compressed air.

FIGURE 11:

2. Assemble press plate 5073 to bearing carrier (1) (Fig. 11).

3. Position bearing race (J) (Fig. 11) into bearing carrier

4. Position bearing installer tool 5077 on outer bearing race.

NOTE: Be sure appropriate end of bearing race installer tool 5077 is facing downward, toward bearing carrier. One end of bearing installer is marked "Eagle" the other end is marked "Jeep".

5. Rotate assembled press plate with bearing carrier and repeat steps 3 and 4 for inner race.

CAUTION: Do not overload press when installing bearing races. Bearing races should be flush with machined shoulder of bearing carrier

FIGURE 12:

6. Pack outer bearing (K) (Fig. 12) and coat race with AMC/Jeep/Renault All Purpose Lubricant P/N 8993630.

7. Place bearing (K) into bearing carrier (L), (Fig. 12).

FIGURE 13:

8. Press outer bearing seal (M) into bearing carrier (N) using seal installer 5079 (Fig. 13).

9. Coat lip of bearing seal with grease.

FIGURE 14:

10. Press bearing carrier (O), (Fig. 14) onto hub (P), (Fig. 13) using bearing installer 5078 and bearing race installer 5077, (Fig. 14).

NOTE: Be sure appropriate end of bearing race installer tool 5077 is facing downward toward hub. One end of the bearing race installer tool is marked "Eagle" the other end is marked "Jeep".

FIGURE 15:

11. Pack inner bearing (Q) (Fig. 15) and coat race with AMC/Jeep/Renault All Purpose Lubricant P/N 8993630.

12. On Jeep models, coat lip of inner bearing seal (R), (Fig. 15) with grease and place on inner bearing.

FIGURE 16:

13. Place hub (S) (Fig. 16) and bearing carrier (T), (Fig. 16) on bearing race installer 5077 (Fig. 16) on press.

14. Position inner bearing (U), (Fig. 16) in bearing carrier (T), (Fig. 16).

15. On Jeep models, place inner bearing and seal (V), (Fig. 16) on bearing carrier (U), (Fig. 16).

16. Install seal installer tool 5080 (Fig. 16) and press inner bearing (U) (Fig. 16) and seal (V) (Fig. 16) onto hub.

FIGURE 2 - FRONT WHEEL BEARING ASSEMBLY:

CAUTION: Use extreme care when pressing inner bearing onto hub. Bearing carrier should rotate freely after inner bearing is installed. Do not attempt to eliminate all bearing lash "freeplay" when operating the press. Final preload will be achieved by tightening the drive axle nut (3) (Fig. 2).

NOTE: On Jeep models, be sure bearing seal is seated squarely in machined surface of bearing carrier.

17. On Jeep models, install carrier seal using tool 5080.
