FRONT AXLE SHAFT OUTER BOOT KIT

Information

A new outer boot for the 1980-83 Eagle front axle half-shafts is now available for service replacement use. The new boot comes in a kit form and includes all the lubricant and hardware required for installation.

Installation of the new outer boot is slightly different from previous designs. It is important that the new boot be vented and assembled to a specified length during installation. Refer to the following procedure when installing one of the new boots.

Filing Instructions

File this I.S. Note in the plastic binder supplied with supplement No. 1 to the 1982 AMC Technical Service Manual.

PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the half-shaft assembly from the vehicle.

2. Remove the spindle and outer constant velocity (CV) joint from the shaft.

3. Remove and discard the shaft circlip and the old boot.

4. Install the new boot and new circlip on the shaft.

5. Apply half the package of grease (supplied in kit) to the inside of the new boot. Use the remainder in the CV joint if it was disassembled or to replace any grease lost during the boot removal.

6. Install the CV joint and spindle on the shaft.

FIGURE 1:

7. Install the boot on the CV joint and secure the boot to the joint with the large clamp as follows:
^ Be sure that the boot is seated in the CV joint groove (1) as shown in Figure 1. Then double wrap the clamp around the boot. Make sure both clamp loops are snug.

FIGURE 2:

^ Insert the free end of clamp through the end of tool J-22716 and through the slot in the tightening nut of tool (Fig. 2). Allow at least 1/2-inch of the clamp end to extend from the nut slot.
^ Install the socket and inch-pound torque wrench on the tightening nut of the clamp installer tool and tighten the large clamp to 65 inch-pounds (7 N-m) torque.

FIGURE 2:

^ Maintain the tightening torque on the clamp and bend the free end of the clamp over the top of the retaining clip with tool J-22716 (Fig. 2). Then tap the clamp bend with a hammer to secure it and to prevent the clamp from slipping out of the clip.

^ Loosen the installer tool tightening nut, pull the clamp between the locking tabs on the clip, and bend the locking tabs down over the clamp to retain it (Fig. 2).

^ Cut the free end of the clamp as close to the retaining clip as possible and remove the clamp installer tool.
8. Vent the boot. Squeeze it by hand to purge air trapped inside.

CAUTION: Do not exceed the specified installed length. This could reduce flexibility and shorten boot life.

FIGURE 1:

9. Check and adjust the installed length of the boot (Fig. 1). Total installed length must be 105.0 mm (4.134 in.). Move the small end of the boot in or out on the shaft to obtain specified length. On 4-cylinder models, there should be a gap of about 28 mm (1-1/8 inches) between the inner and outer boots. On 6-cylinder models, the boots should touch (no gap).

CAUTION: Before tightening the small end boot clamp, be sure boot length is correct and that the boot is seated on the larger diameter (2) of the shaft as shown in Figure 1. The boot must not be clamped to the smaller diameter (3) of the shaft.

10. Install and tighten the small end boot clamp as outlined in step 7. Tighten this clamp to 20 inchpounds (2.3 N-m) torque.
