Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain cooling system, then disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses.
3. Loosen clamp retaining air cleaner hose assembly to air cleaner, then disconnect hose.
4. Remove engine fan attaching bolts, then remove engine fan.
5. Disconnect barometric manifold absolute pressure sensor electrical connector and vacuum hose at dash panel.
6. Remove throttle linkage shroud, then disconnect linkage at throttle body.
7. Loosen drive belt idler arm retaining bolts, then pull injector wiring harness forward to provide clearance for disconnecting sensors.
8. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor and sender electrical connectors.
9. Disconnect vacuum hoses at canister purge solenoid.
10. On models equipped with power steering, disconnect power steering switch electrical connector.
11. On all models, disconnect heater hoses at engine side of ballast tube. Mark hoses so they can be installed in the same position.
12. Disconnect breather tube from air cleaner and rocker cover and remove.
13. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect oil cooler lines at radiator.
14. On all models, remove radiator attaching bolts, then lift radiator from vehicle.
15. Remove alternator drive belt.
16. On models equipped with A/C, remove compressor with refrigerant lines attached and secure to frame side rail with wire.
17. On all models, remove bolt attaching oil fill tube to alternator bracket.
18. On models equipped with automatic transmission, bolt attaching oil fill tube to top of manifold, then carefully lift tube out from top of vehicle.
19. On all models, disconnect electrical connectors from rear of alternator.
20. Disconnect vacuum line from power brake unit.
21. Remove steering gear to steering shaft retaining bolt.
22. From inside vehicle, remove engine cover and disconnect electrical connectors from radio frequency interference suppressor, TFI module and oil pressure sender.
23. On models equipped with manual transmission, place shift lever in the Neutral position, then remove bolts attaching shift boot to floor. Remove shift lever to transmission attaching bolts, then lift shift lever from transmission.
24. On all models, raise and support front of vehicle, then disconnect fuel lines at sender.
25. Disconnect oil level sensor electrical connector.
26. Remove driveshaft assembly from vehicle.
27. Disconnect speedometer cable at transmission.
28. Remove starter motor assembly.
29. On models with manual transmission, disconnect hydraulic hose from clutch slave cylinder. Cap hydraulic hose and slave cylinder openings.
30. On models with manual transmission, disconnect electrical connectors from backup lamp switch and shift indicator and neutral position senders located on transmission.
31. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect neutral safety switch electrical connector, vacuum modulator vacuum hose and shift and kickdown control cables from transmission.
32. On models with automatic transmission, remove transmission as described under ``Transmission, Replace'' in the ``Automatic Transmission Section.'' On models with manual transmission, the engine maybe removed with the transmission removed or installed.
33. On all models, remove exhaust pipe and catalytic converter.
34. Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
35. Disconnect engine ground straps located at cylinder head behind power steering pump and just above exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe connection.
36. Disconnect stabilizer bar from lower control arms.
37. Disconnect front brake hoses from brake lines at bracket on frame behind spindle. Cap opening at brake hoses and brake lines.
38. Position a suitable jack under lower control arm and raise arm until coil spring tension is relieved, then remove nut attaching upper ball joint to spindle. Carefully lower jack and disconnect spindle from upper ball joint.
39. Position support table No. 109-00002 or equivalent under crossmember and engine assembly, then slowly lower jack until crossmember is resting on support table.
40. Position wooden blocks under front crossmember and rear of engine block to keep assembly level, then install safety chains around crossmember and support table.
41. With engine and crossmember properly supported on support table, remove nuts retaining crossmember to frame.
42. Carefully lower engine and crossmember from vehicle.
43. Reverse procedure to install.
