Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Fig. 6 Front cover removal & installation:
1. Drain cooling system, then disconnect lower radiator hose.
2. Remove idler pulley and bracket assembly.
3. Remove all drive belts.
4. Remove water pump as described under ``Water Pump, Replace.''
5. Remove crankshaft pulley and damper.
6. Remove bolts attaching front cover to oil pan.
7. Remove bolts attaching timing cover to engine block, then remove front cover, Fig. 6.
8. Carefully cut and remove exposed portion of oil pan gasket. Apply a suitable sealing compound to exposed portion of oil pan. From a replacement oil pan gasket, cut and position required portion of gasket on oil pan. Apply sealing compound to corners of gasket.
9. Coat sealing surfaces of front cover and engine block with sealing compound.
10. Position front cover to engine block and install attaching bolts, Fig. 6. Apply sealant to front cover bolt which enters water jacket on engine block.
11. Install front cover seal as described under ``Front Oil Seal, Replace.''
12. Install crankshaft damper and pulley.
13. Install water pump assembly.
14. Install drive belts and idler pulley and bracket assembly.
15. Connect bottom radiator hose and fill cooling system, then start engine and check for leaks.
