Ignition Lock: Service and Repair


REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. Using suitable channel lock or vise grip pliers, twist lock cylinder cap until it separates from lock cylinder.
4. Remove steering column trim shroud, then disconnect electrical connector from key warning switch.
5. Place lock cylinder at Run position.
6. Prick punch key lock cylinder retaining pin and drill out with 1/8 inch bit, noting the following:
a. Do not drill deeper than 1/2 inch deep.
b. Put piece of masking tape on bit 1/2 in from tip. Take care not to damage housing.
7. Using 3/8 in diameter drill, drill down middle of ignition lock key slot approximately 1 3/4 in until lock cylinder breaks loose from breakaway base of cylinder.
8. Remove lock cylinder and drill shavings from lock cylinder housing.
9. Remove retainer, bearing and gear. Thoroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from casting, then inspect housing for damage resulting from removal. If damage is apparent, lock cylinder housing must be replaced.
10. To install, turn lock cylinder to Run position, then press retaining pin and insert assembly into housing.
11. Ensure cylinder is fully seated and aligned into interlocking washer, then turn key to Off position to extend cylinder retaining pin into cylinder housing.
12. Turn key and check for proper operation in all positions.
13. Install steering column trim shroud, then connect key warning switch electrical connector.
14. Install steering wheel.
15. Connect battery ground cable.
