Evaporator Core: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

NOTE: Before replacing the A/C evaporator core an on-vehicle leak test must be performed. Please refer to Heating ad Air Conditioning/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair

2. Discharge the refrigerant from the A/C system. Please refer to Heating ad Air Conditioning/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair
3. Remove A/C evaporator housing. Please refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Evaporator Case/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair

CAUTION: Use a backup wrench to prevent component damage when removing the suction accumulator/drier from the A/C evaporator core.

4. Loosen the fitting connecting the suction accumulator/drier to the A/C evaporator core.
5. Remove the screws from the A/C evaporator housing bracket.
6. Remove the suction accumulator/drier.
7. Remove evaporator core housing heat shield screw and two push clips.
8. Remove the screws which separate the halves of the A/C evaporator housing.
9. Remove the A/C evaporator core.

Installation

1. Install the A/C evaporator core in the A/C evaporator housing.
2. Install the nine A/C evaporator housing screws. Tighten the A/C evaporator housing screws to a minimum of 0.7 N.m (6 lb-in).
3. Install the suction accumulator/drier in the A/C evaporator housing bracket.
4. Install the screws in the A/C evaporator housing bracket.

CAUTION: Use a backup wrench to prevent component damage when installing the suction accumulator/drier to the A/C evaporator core.

NOTE:
When the A/C evaporator core is replaced, the suction accumulator/drier must be replaced.

5. Install the suction accumulator/drier to the A/C evaporator core. Tighten the A/C evaporator core nut to 35-42 N.m (26-31 lb-ft).
6. Install evaporator core housing heat shield screw and two push clips. Tighten screw to 2-3 N.m (21-25 lb-in).
7. Install the A/C evaporator housing. Please refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Evaporator Case/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair
8. Charge the A/C system. Please refer to Heating ad Air Conditioning/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair

NOTE: When battery voltage is removed from the powertrain control module (PCM), all learned values will be cleared and reset to predetermined values. When battery voltage is restored to the PCM, the vehicle may exhibit certain driveability concerns. It will be necessary to drive the vehicle to allow the PCM to relearn values for optimum driveability and performance.

9. Connect battery ground cable.
10. Check the A/C and heater system for proper operation.
