Hubcap - Loose/Missing
Article No. 85-22-6HUBCAP - LOOSE/MISSING - POLICE/TAXI VEHICLES
FORD 1985 LTD, MUSTANG
Vehicles built from March 19, 1985, through the end of the 1985 model year may exhibit loose or missing hubcaps. This condition is the result of some steel wheels manufactured with hubcap retaining nubbins not to specification.
Concerns of loose or missing hubcaps can be verified and serviced by using the following procedure:
1. Loose hubcap - use the jack handle supplied with the vehicle to remove the hubcap. If the hubcap pops off easily using the jack handle or can be pulled off by hand and the wheel has the manufacture date code shown in Step 2, replace the wheel.
Figure 10 - Manufacture Date Code:
2. Missing hubcap - check the spider manufacture date code stamped on wheel (see Figure 10). Replace the wheel and the missing hubcap if the stamped code is:
C-5-19 thru C-5-31 D-5-1 thru D-5-30 E-5-1 thru E-5-31 F-5-1 only
3. Wheels on spare tires should also be checked and replaced as required.
Existing dealer inventory should also be inspected for suspect wheels. Wheels having the spider manufacturing code as shown in Step 2 above should be returned and replaced with certified service stock.
All wheels replaced under warranty should be charged to Program Code L16. This charge includes the inspection, dismounting, remounting, balancing of new wheel and existing tire and replacement of hubcap. All wheels from vehicles should be mutilated by cuffing the rim and then scrapped.
4. As an option, the police or taxi fleet may elect to install full wheel covers instead of replacing the wheels and hub-caps. All wheel covers installed under warranty should be charged to Program Code L16.
