Engine Cranks But Does Not Start

1. Conduct spark test, if necessary, as follows. Before proceeding with the spark test, cover high tension cable (spark plug wire) with dry paper, or some other suitable insulating material to prevent shock before cranking the engine.
a. Connect spark tester, or make a spark test on cable from any spark plug.
b. Hold end of cable close to engine block and while cranking engine, check to see if a spark jumps across the gap.
c. If spark jumps across the gap, attach a suitable voltmeter at ignition coil positive (+) terminal with ignition switch on. Voltage reading should be 12 volts.
d. If no spark occurs, check for shorted primary coil, incorrect distributor air gap, burned distributor cap points, open or loosely connected primary coil circuit electrical connectors. Check distributor rotor and cap. If rotor and cap are satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If rotor and/or cap is defective, replace as required.
2. Check ignition coil. Check primary and secondary circuits for proper connections. Check coil for an open circuit, replace coil as required. If ignition coil is satisfactory, proceed to step 3.
3. Check high tension cable(s). Properly connect any disconnected cable as necessary and check for correct resistance from distributor cap terminal to spark plug terminal.
4. If cable(s) are excessively worn and/or frayed, replace as necessary.
5. Check spark plugs. Ensure spark plugs are properly gapped. Replace damaged spark plugs as required.
6. Check ignition timing and adjust as necessary.
7. Check valve timing and correct as necessary.
