FORD: 1989 PROBE


ISSUE: A rough engine idle, engine miss, poor engine performance, fouled spark plugs or oil consumption may be caused by a hairline crack in the cylinder head near an intake valve guide. This crack can cause engine oil to build-up in the valve area and combustion chamber.

ACTION: Inspect the cylinder head to determine if replacment is required. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Check the engine for idle quality and misfire.

2. Remove the spark plugs and inspect them for fouling and oil deposits on the electrodes.

3. If the spark plugs are oil fouled, remove the cylinder head for inspection. Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 21-05-13 for service details.

4. If oil deposits are found in the valve/combustion area, remove the valves. Check for hairline cracks near the underside of the valve guide(s). Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 21-05-40 for service details.

5. Install a new cylinder head if a hairline crack is located. Clean and inspect all parts removed. Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 21-05-46 for service details.
