Shifter A/T: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove console assembly as follows:

Console Assembly Removal:






a. Remove two access covers at rear of console, then the armrest retaining bolts.
b. Remove four armrest to floor bracket retaining bolts, then the armrest assembly.
c. Remove gearshift lever opening finish panel and shift knob, then slide finish panel up to remove.
d. Place emergency brake lever in up position, remove four retaining screws and lift top finish panel up, then disconnect electrical connectors and remove top finish panel.
e. Remove two console to rear floor bracket retaining screws, then insert a small screwdriver into two notches at bottom of front upper finish panel and snap out.
f. On models equipped with radio opening cover plate with stowage bin, use a small screwdriver to pry cover plate out of console.
g. On models equipped with radio with stowage bin or radio with graphic equalizer, disconnect battery ground cable, install radio remover tool No. T87P-19061-A or equivalent into radio face plate. Push radio remover in approximately one inch to release clips, apply a light spreading force and pull radio out of dash, then disconnect electrical connectors.
h. On all models, open glove compartment door and drop glove compartment assembly down, then remove two console to instrument panel retaining screws.
i. Remove four console to bracket retaining screws, then the console from vehicle.
2. Disconnect shifter interlock cable from shifter housing and interlock cam, then the indicator lamp wire.
3. Place shifter lever in Overdrive, then raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove lower linkage retaining nut, then disconnect shift rod.
5. Lower vehicle, then remove shifter to floor pan retaining screws and shifter assembly.

INSTALLATION
1. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque shifter retaining bolts to 4-5 ft lbs and interlock cable retaining screw to 10-13 in lbs.
b. Place shifter lever in Overdrive and apply a three pound rearward force to lever, raise and support vehicle, then connect shift rod, replacing plastic grommet as previously described and torque to 11-19 ft lbs.
c. Lower vehicle and check shifter operation. Adjust manual linkage, if necessary.
