A/C System Flushing
SYSTEM FLUSHINGWARNING: USE EXTREME CARE AND OBSERVE ALL SAFETY AND SERVICE PRECAUTIONS RELATED TO THE USE OF REFRIGERANTS.
WARNING: DUE TO REFRIGERANT HAZARDS, ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES AND NON-PENETRABLE GLOVES WHEN WORKING ON OR FLUSHING A/C SYSTEMS.
CAUTION: Suction accumulator/drier, receiver/drier, muffler, hoses, thermal expansion valve and fixed orifice tube should be removed. Do not flush these components. Internal plumbing of these devices makes it impossible to properly remove residual flushing agent. Except for hoses, these components are typically discarded after A/C system contamination. Hoses can typically be reused unless they are clogged with debris.
CAUTION: The 3.78 liters (1 gal) of Ford A/C Flushing Solvent F4AZ-19579-A and the FL 1-A filter used in the Rotunda A/C Flusher 014-009g1 are intended for use on one vehicle only. They may be used to flush both the A/C condenser core and A/C evaporator core on an individual vehicle, but under no circumstance should they be used on more than one vehicle.
The Rotunda A/C Flusher 014-00991 or equivalent allows flushing of the A/C evaporator core and A/C condenser core to remove contaminates which result from compressor failure. Use this method of flushing the A/C system to clean and flush these components without removing them from the vehicle.
1. Discharge the A/C system into a proper recovery system. Refer to the refrigerant discharging and recovery procedures.
2. Clean all dirt and debris from the outside fitting on the A/C evaporator core and A/C condenser core.
3. Disconnect the A/C hoses from the A/C evaporator core and A/C condenser core. If the component tube fittings are the female spring lock type, check the inside of each fitting for scratches, corrosion, or surface residue. Clean the female fittings using the following procedure:
a. Remove any surface residue from the inside of the female fitting by polishing with 400 grit emery cloth. Use only a twisting motion so that any scratches made will not cross the O-ring sealing surface.
b. Continue polishing using 600 grit emery cloth.
c. Remove all residue from polishing the fitting by wiping with a lint-free cloth.
4. Use O-rings with A/C flusher fittings to ensure a leak-free connection.
NOTE: Select the proper A/C flusher fitting for the component being flushed.
NOTE: All flushing and purging will be performed in the direction opposite the normal flow of refrigerant in an A/C system.
Securely attach the Rotunda A/C Flusher 014-00991 or equivalent as follows:
a. Attach the A/C flusher flush line to the outlet tube.
b. Attach the A/C flusher return line to the inlet tube.
5. Connect the static ground strap to the vehicle.
CAUTION: The Rotunda A/C Flusher 014-OO991 is for use only with Ford A/C Flushing Solvent F4AZ-19549-A. Use of any other flushing solvent or agent may cause damage to the flusher. Substitute solvents or agents may not be removed during the purging process. These may leave residues which can damage A/C system components.
6. Fill the solvent reservoir of the Rotunda A/C Flusher 014-00991 or equivalent with one gallon of Ford A/C Flushing Solvent F4AZ-19579-A.
7. Place A/C flusher mode valve 1 in purge position and mode valve 2 in the flush position. Set A/C flusher pump switch to OFF.
8. Ensure the purge air valve is in the OFF position, then attach air hose to the flush quick coupler.
9. Do not proceed with the flushing procedure it the cooling an does not operate. Refer to the A/C instruction manual provided with the equipment.
NOTE: A/C flusher cooling fan must be operating when the A/C flusher is attached to a power source.
If the vehicle battery will be used as the power source, attach a battery charger (minimum 10 amps continuous operation) to the vehicle, then attach A/C flusher battery connectors to the battery charger.
10. Set A/C flusher pump switch to ON, then slowly turn A/C flusher mode valve 1 to the flush position.
11. Operate the A/C flusher pump for a minimum of 15 minutes. After 15 minutes of continuous operation, return A/C flusher mode valve 1 to purge position for 1 minute.
12. Place A/C flusher pump switch to OFF, then disconnect air hose from flush quick coupler.
13. Attach air hose to purge quick coupler, then slowly engage the air purge valve to full flow for 1 minute.
14. Release the air purge valve lever, then place A/C flusher mode valve 2 in purge position.
15. Depress the air purge valve lever and lock in the full flow position with the sliding lock ring.
CAUTION: Failure to continue air purge for the entire 30 minutes may result in residual amounts of flush solvent contaminating the A/C system. Residual flush solvent in a functioning A/C system may lead to A/C system failure.
NOTE: During the 30-minute air purge drain any accumulation of water from the moisture trap.
16. Operate the air purge for a minimum of 30 minutes. After 30 minutes of continuous operation, release the air purge valve lever.
17. Disconnect the air hose, then the A/C flusher inlet and outlet hoses.
18. Disconnect the static ground strap.
19. Disconnect the A/C flusher fittings from the component being flushed.
20. Remove the A/C flusher battery connectors.
21. Connect A/C hoses to the A/C evaporator core and A/C condenser core.
22. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
23. Leak test A/C system.
