Neutralizing Exhaust System
The exhaust system must be neutralized while it is hot because the thermal expansion of the pipe will otherwise place a strain on the hangers.
Use the following procedures to neutralize the exhaust system:
1. Bring the exhaust system to normal operating temperature.
2. Loosen all of the exhaust bolts.
3. Reposition the exhaust so it hangs free and straight.
4. Loosen the flanges at the exhaust manifold.
5. Key ON, engine running.
6. Shift the vehicle through entire range of gears.
7. Shift the vehicle into NEUTRAL (N).
8. Key OFF.
9. Tighten all flanges and exhaust bolts.
Refer to torque specifications.
Be certain that no grounding condition exists and that adequate clearance exists along the entire length of the exhaust system.
