Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove the shift console panel.





2. Loosen locknut "A" and then disconnect the ignition/shifter interlock cable from the bracket on the gearshift lever.

CAUTION: Do not loosen locknut "B." It is factory preset for proper shift interlock operation.

3. Attach mechanic's wire to the ignition/shifter interlock cable to aid cable installation.

NOTE: Mechanic's wire is meant to be used as a guide that will allow you to route the ignition/shifter interlock cable in the exact place that the original was located.

4. Remove the two hold-down bracket screws securing the ignition/shifter interlock cable to the bulkhead under the instrument panel.





5. Remove the three steering column shroud screws from the lower half of the steering column shroud.
6. Separate and remove the upper and lower halves of the steering column shroud.





7. Remove the ignition/shifter interlock cable-to-lock cylinder bolt at the lock cylinder housing.
8. Remove the ignition/shifter interlock cable.
9. Disconnect the mechanic's wire from the ignition/shifter interlock cable.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Be careful not to kink the ignition/shifter interlock cable.

NOTE: Mechanic's wire is meant to be used as a guide that will allow you to route the ignition/shifter interlock cable in the exact place that the original was located.

1. Attach the mechanic's wire to the ignition/shifter interlock cable and route the cable from the ignition switch to the gearshift lever.
2. Remove the mechanic's wire.
3. Connect the ignition/shifter interlock cable to the lock cylinder housing.
4. Install the ignition/shifter interlock cable-to-lock cylinder bolt to the lock cylinder housing. Tighten the ignition/shifter interlock cable-to-lock cylinder bolt to 4-6 Nm (37-54 inch lbs.).
5. Install the upper half of the steering column shroud.
6. Position the lower half of the steering column shroud and install the three steering column shroud screws.
7. Install the hold-down bracket screw to each hold-down bracket.
8. Tighten the shift locknut "A" to 10-15 Nm (89-132 inch lbs.).
9. Install the shift console panel.
10. Inspect the-ignition/shifter interlock system.
