Vehicle Identification Number






DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
A 17 digit combination of numbers and letters forms the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is stamped on a metal tab that is riveted to the instrument panel and is viewed by looking through the windshield glass on the driver's side. The VIN number is also found on the Vehicle Certification (VC) label.

The VIN is used for title and registration purposes and for warranty identification. The VIN indicates:
- Manufacturer
- Type of restraint system
- Vehicle line and series
- Body type
- Engine
- Model year
- Assembly plant
- Production sequence number






DEFINITION





World Manufacturer Identifier
The world manufacturer identifier codes are located in VIN positions 1, 2 and 3.





Restraint System Type
The restraint system type code is located in VIN position 4.





Manufacturer Specification
The manufacturer specification code is located in VIN position 5.





Line, Series, Body Type (Passenger Cars)
The Line, Series, Body Type (Passenger Cars) codes are located in VIN positions 6 and 7.





Engine Type
The engine type code is located in VIN position 8.





Check Digit
The check digit code is located in VIN position 9.





Vehicle Model Year
The vehicle model year code is located in VIN position 10.





Assembly Plant
The assembly plant code is located in VIN position 11.





Production Sequence Number
The production sequence number codes are located in VIN positions 12 through 17.
