Replacement

1. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
2. Place a suitable container under the transaxle drain plug.
3. Remove the transaxle drain plug and drain transmission fluid.

NOTE: If an internal transaxle problem is suspected, drain the fluid through a paper filter, such as a coffee filter. A small amount of metal or friction particles may be found from normal wear. However, if excessive metal and friction particles are present, internal service will be required.

a. Reinstall case plug.
b. Remove drain pan and any other obstructions. Lower the vehicle.
c. Add 4.7 liters (5 qts) of Motor craft MERCON(r) Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or MERCON(r) equivalent. Start the engine and move the transmission range selector lever through all gear positions for 5 minutes.
d. Raise vehicle on hoist.
e. Place container under the case plug.
f. Remove the plug and drain the transmission fluid. Install the Transaxle drain plug. Lower the vehicle.
4. Add 4.7L (5 quarts) of automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
7. Start the engine and run through all gears for a total of 5 minutes at idle. Turn OFF the engine.
8. Raise and support the vehicle.
9. Place a suitable container under the Transaxle drain plug.
10. Remove the Transaxle drain plug and drain the fluid.
11. After fluid has drained, clean drain plug threads and apply a small amount of Pipe Sealant with Teflon D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G350-A2 and ESR-M18P7-A.
12. Install the Transaxle drain plug. Tighten the Transaxle drain plug to 25-29 (19-21ft. lbs.).
13. Remove the drain pan and any other obstructions. Lower the vehicle.
14. Add 3.7L (4 quarts) of Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent. Start the vehicle and move the transmission range selector through all gear positions. Check the fluid and add as required.
