Power Steering Fluid: Service and Repair

DESCRIPTION

Start-up procedure for after power steering pump or gear service. After engine start up, follow the Fill Procedure to eliminate excessive steering system noise due to air trapped in the system during service.

INITIAL FILL
1. Disconnect the ignition coil to distributor high tension wiring, and raise front wheels off floor.
2. Fill the power steering pump reservoir.
3. Crank the engine with the starter motor and add fluid until the level remains constant.

NOTE: The front wheels must be off the floor during lock-to-lock rotation of the steering wheel.

4. While cranking the engine, rotate the steering wheel from lock-to-lock.
5. Check the fluid level and add Motorcraft Mercon Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or Mercon equivalent fluid if necessary.
6. Connect the ignition coil to distributor high tension wiring.

FINAL FILL
1. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes.
2. Rotate steering wheel from lock-to-lock.
