Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

Special Tools:






Removal

1. NOTE: Using an Allen key to stop the piston rod turning.





Loosen the nuts on both suspension struts five turns (right-hand side shown).
2. Loosen the left-hand front wheel nuts.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.





4. Remove the left-hand front wheel.





5. Remove the left-hand tie-rod nut.

6. CAUTION: Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.





Using the special tool, detach the tie-rod ball joint.





7. Detach both suspension arms (left-hand side shown).





8. Remove the mounting bracket from right-hand front drive halfshaft intermediate bearing.

9. CAUTION: The inner joint must not be bend more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.





Remove the right-hand front drive halfshaft from the transaxle and tie it up.

10. CAUTION: The inner joint must not be bend more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.





Remove the left-hand front drive halfshaft from the transaxle.
- Using the special tool, detach the halfshaft from the transaxle.
- Pull out the halfshaft from the transaxle, using cable ties, tie it up.
- Using a plug, close off the transaxle opening.





11. Using the special tool, remove the differential seal(s).
1. Install the special tool.
2. Install the special tool.
3. Remove and discard the differential seal(s).

Installation





1. Using the special tool, install the differential seal(s).

2. CAUTION: The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees; the outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.

NOTE: Install new nuts and a new center bearing cap.





Install the right-hand front drive halfshaft together with the intermediate shaft.

3. CAUTION: The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees; the outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.

NOTE: Install the new snap ring.





Install the left-hand front drive halfshaft (subframe removed shown).





4. Install both suspension arms (left-hand side shown).





5. Install the left-hand tie-rod end.





6. Install the left-hand front wheel.
7. Lower the vehicle.

8. NOTE: Use an Allen key to stop the piston rod turning.





Tighten the left-hand and right-hand suspension strut nut (right-hand side shown).
9. Check the automatic transaxle fluid level and correct as necessary.
