FORD:
2010 Focus

ISSUE
Some 2010 Focus vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle and built between 10/1/2009-10/31/2009 may exhibit a warble (cyclical growling) type noise from the front of the vehicle while accelerating. This noise may be caused by the front drive intermediate shaft bearing rotating in the bearing support bracket.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
THE TRANSAXLE MAY BE MISTAKEN AS THE CAUSE OF THIS NOISE.

1. Mark the location of the front drive intermediate shaft bearing in relation to the support bracket and retaining strap.

2. Drive the vehicle in manual 1st gear at engine speeds of 3,000 to 4,500 RPM.

NOTE
ENGINE SPEED IS MORE CRITICAL THAN VEHICLE SPEED IN STEP 2.

3. If a warble type noise is heard, check the front drive intermediate shaft bearing for rotation relative to the location marks from Step 1.

a. If no warble noise is heard and no front drive intermediate shaft bearing rotation is detected, then continue with normal diagnostics. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 100-04.

b. If a warble noise is heard and the front drive intermediate shaft bearing rotation is detected. Proceed to Step 4.

4. Remove the right hand half shaft. Refer to WSM, Section 205-04.

5. Remove and discard the 3 bracket-to-block bolts and bracket.

6. Install the 3 bracket-to-block bolts and bracket. Torque bolts to 35 lb-ft. (48 N.m)

7. Install the right hand half shaft. Refer to WSM, Section 205-04.
