Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection

(figure 3) Measuring Primary Ignition Coil Resistance:

(Figure 4) Measuring The Secondary Ignition Coil Resistance:

TOOLS REQUIRED (or equivalents)
^ J-34029-A, Digital multimeter.

INSPECTION
1. Turn the ignition switch to "RUN."
2. Measure the voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal with a J 34029-A digital multimeter.
^ If battery voltage is not detected, check the engine wiring harness and the ignition coil connector. Also check the underhood fuse/relay center for blown fuses.
3. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF."
4. Measure the primary ignition coil resistance with a J 34029-A digital multimeter. If the resistance is not 1.3 to 1.6 ohms, replace the ignition coil.
5. Measure the secondary ignition coil resistance with a J 34029-A digital multimeter. If the resistance is not 10,400 to 14,000 ohms, replace the ignition coil.
