Piston Ring: Service and Repair
REMOVALRemove compression rings and oil ring using a ring expander.
INSTALLATION
1. There are two types of first rings, marked and unmarked. When installing a new unmarked first ring it is not necessary to distinguish its top from bottom (i.e., either side can face upward, but when reinstalling a used one be sure to distinguish its top from bottom as it was installed before removal and direct topside upward).
2. Piston ring to piston:
- When using marked rings: First and second piston ring(s) have R or T mark. When installing these piston rings to piston, face the marked side of each ring to the top of piston.
- Upper compression ring differs from lower compression ring in thickness, shape and color of the surface contacting cylinder wall.
- When installing oil ring, install the spacer first and then the two rails.
3. After installing compression and oil rings, align their end gaps.
