Poor Acceleration
SYMPTOM
The transmission is in 4th gear when the car is accelerated from a stop, resulting in a customer complaint of "poor acceleration".
Other Symptoms:
^ No 4-2 or 4-3 kick-down.
^ No upshift on acceleration.
NOTE: These symptoms may not cause the S3 light to flash or the transmission ECU to have a code.
DIAGNOSIS
Perform a modulator pressure test using the following procedure:
1. Raise the car
2. Install pressure gauges to the 2 bottom test ports on the torque converter housing. Label the upper test port "A" and the lower test port "B".
^ Check the first gear solenoid pressure:
Engage Drive with the engine at idle. With the wheels spinning, gauge readings should be:
5 kg/sq.cm. (71 psi) for solenoid "A". 0 kg/sq./cm. (0 psi) for solenoid "B".
NOTE: You will need an assistant to apply the brakes for the following checks.
^ Check the 2nd gear solenoid pressure:
Engage manual second with the engine at idle, wheels stopped. The gauge readings should be:
0 kg/sq.cm. (0 psi) for solenoid "A". 0 kg/sq.cm. (0 psi) for solenoid "B".
^ Check the 3rd gear solenoid pressure:
Engage reverse with the engine at idle, wheels stopped. The gauge readings should be:
0 kg/sq.cm. (0 psi) for solenoid "A". 5 kg/sq.cm. (71 psi) for solenoid "B".
^ Check the 4th gear solenoid pressure:
Engage neutral, wait 5 seconds with the engine at idle, wheels stopped. The solenoid pressures should be:
5 kg/sq.cm. (71 psi) for solenoid "A". 5 kg/sq.cm. (71 psi) for solenoid "B".
^ If the solenoid pressures are all correct, replace the ECU with a known -good one and test drive.
^ If any of the solenoid pressures are not correct, proceed to corrective action.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the shift solenoids using the following procedure:
1. Remove and disassemble the transmission as described in the service manual.
2. Check the solenoid filter screens and replace the shift solenoids.
NOTE: Clean the filter screens and magnet if they are clogged with metal particles.
3. Inspect the clutches, the differential side gears, pinion gears and the reverse gears for damage or deterioration.
NOTE: If any of the gears are damaged also replace the torque converter Be sure to flush the oil cooler and lines.
