Oil Pan: Service and Repair
1982 CONTINENTAL V6-232
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner and air intake duct.
2. Remove fan shroud attaching screws and position shroud over fan, then remove engine oil dipstick.
3. Remove vacuum solenoid from dash panel and position on engine with vacuum hoses attached.
4. Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold attaching nuts.
5. Drain crankcase, then remove oil filter.
6. Remove shift linkage bracket to converter housing attaching bolts.
7. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines at radiator. Remove four converter cover attaching bolts, then remove converter cover.
8. Remove bolts attaching engine damper to No. 2 crossmember.
9. Disconnect steering gear at flex coupling, then remove steering gear to main crossmember attaching bolts and allow steering gear to rest on frame.
10. Remove nuts and bolts attaching from engine mounts to chassis, then raise engine approximately 2 to 3 inches and insert wooden block between engine mounts and frame. On some models, it may be necessary to raise engine as much as 5 inches to provide clearance for oil pan removal. On these models, transmission fluid dipstick tube may contact Thermactor air tube. If contact occurs, lower engine and remove dipstick and air tube.
11. Remove oil pan attaching bolts, then lower oil pan to crossmember.
12. Remove oil pump pickup tube attaching bolts and pickup tube bracket attaching nut, then lower pickup tube into oil pan.
13. Remove oil pan through front of vehicle, then remove oil pan gaskets and seals.
14. Reverse procedure to install. Using a small screwdriver, work tabs of oil pan seal into gap between rear main bearing cap and cylinder block, then with tabs positioned, work seal into groove on rear main bearing cap. Apply a {1-8} inch bead of silicone sealer D6AZ-19562-B or equivalent where front cover and cylinder block join and where rear main bearing cap and cylinder block join. Apply a {1-8} inch bead along oil pan rail surface of cylinder block and a {1-4} inch bead along front cover to oil pan surface. When using silicone sealant, assembly must occur within 15 minutes after sealant application. After this time, the sealer may start to set, and its sealing effectiveness may be reduced.
