STALLS, HESITATIONS DURING COLD START/DRIVEAWAY - 5.0L ENGINE
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1982 CONTINENTAL
CALIBRATIONS: 2-20R-R2, 2-20R-R16
Cold engine start-up and driveaway can be improved by revising the distributor cold start spark hold system and cannister purge system. TSB 82-11-2 should also be used. This TSB has been revised by TSB 8387S.
1. Remove carburetor air cleaner assembly.
FIGURE 4:
2. Remove vacuum restrictor (part no. D7AE- 12A225-AA) (.015" blue) located in (E25E- 9E455-BA) vacuum harness and install a distributor retard control valve (part no. 12A208). White side should face carburetor and brown side toward distributor (Figure 4).
FIGURE 5:
3. Observing Figure 5, remove (381337-S060A) fuel vapor return hose from (D8AE-9E645-AA) tee and the bowl vent solenoid. Remove (381337-S130A) hose from D8AE-9E645-AA tee and evaporator canister.
4. Remove vacuum hose (E0AE-9324-CA) connecting purge control solenoid and 3-way tee in fuel vapor return harness assembly. Discard hose. Retain Tee. (Figure 5).
FIGURE 6:
5. Rotate hose 381337-S130A end for end and install new (9E589) thermal vent valve with green side toward hose (381337-S130A) which now attaches bowl vent solenoid (Figure 6).
6. Cut hose (381337-S060A, Step #3) in half and install both halves on tee (D8AE-9E645-AA, Step #3) then connect hose and tee assembly to thermal vent valve (Figure 6). Connect open end of hose to canister.
7. Obtain a 16.0" x 7/32" vacuum hose, D0PZ- 12226-C, and install between 3-way tee (Step #3) and purge control solenoid (Step #4).
8. Remove preformed hose at carburetor bowl vent connection. Cut hose 1/2" below preformed elbow and discard. Obtain and install connector assembly (part no. 9J313) with rubber connector to carburetor and 3/8" plastic connector to hose. Before installing connector (9J313) cut 1/2" off of rubber connector (Figure 6).
9. Ensure that routing of fuel vapor return hose is with a downward slope and thermal vent valve is in an open location not contacting air cleaner heat tube or
alternator. Secure hose with bundling strap (95873-S).
NOTE: Customers should be informed that short durations of detonation may occur (2-4 seconds) on accelerations, during cold driveaway. This detonation is considered normal.
^ All vehicles with previous carburetor concerns should have choke specifications verified. Set-up procedures are outlined in the 81/82 carburetor flip chart 0900-020 CTP-1982-3 and 2700/7200 VV Handbook, 2412-001. Also, proper indexing of choke cap should be verified (set at index).
^ All vehicles built with 2-20R-R02 calibration should be updated to TSB 82-11-2, dated June 4, 1982.
10. Ensure all hoses are installed and routed securely and there are no kinks or bends.
11. Install carburetor air cleaner assembly.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
