Oil Pump: Service and Repair


REMOVAL

1. Remove oil pan as previously described.
2. Remove lower timing belt cover, then the timing belt pulley. On 1988 models, use tools 49B011102 and 49S120710, or equivalents, to remove pulley.
3. Remove oil strainer, then the oil pump.

DISASSEMBLY, INSPECTION & ASSEMBLY

1. Remove oil pump cover attaching bolt and the cover.
2. Remove inner and outer gears.
3. Remove split pin and the plunger assembly.
4. Remove oil seal.
5. Inspect for distortion or damage to pump body, weak or damaged plunger and weak or broken plunger spring, replacing as necessary.
6. Check clearance between inner gear tooth tip and outer gear. Clearance should not exceed .0078 inch (.2 mm).
7. Check clearance between outer gear and pump body. Clearance should not exceed .0087 inch (.22 mm).
8. Check side clearance. Clearance should not exceed .0055 inch (.14 mm).
9. If clearances are not within limits, replace gear assembly or oil pump body.
10. Reverse disassembly procedure to assemble, noting the following:
a. When installing pump cover, coat screw threads with suitable locking compound.
b. When installing seal, apply engine oil to pump body and new seal and press in seal until it is flush with front of pump body.

INSTALLATION

Reverse removal procedure to install.
