Parking Brake System: Service and Repair

1. Remove rear brake rotor, then remove parking brake shoe upper and lower return springs. If parking brake shoes prevent rotor from being removed, remove rotor service plug and use a suitable screwdriver to rotate shoe adjuster in direction opposite arrow mark on rotor.
2. Remove shoe hold springs and pins, Fig. 18, then the shoes, adjuster and operating lever.
3. Inspect parking brake components as follows:
a. Inspect shoe contact surface on inside of rotor. If abnormal wear or scratches are evident, or if inner diameter exceeds 7.52 inches, replace rotor.
b. Inspect parking brake shoe linings. If peeling, cracking or abnormal wear are evident, or if lining thickness is below 0.04 inch, replace shoes as a set.

4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Refer to Caliper/Service and Repair for caliper and brake pad installation notes and precautions.
b. Adjust shoes and cable as described under Parking Brake/Adjustments.
