Variable Induction System: Testing and Inspection
SYSTEM INSPECTION1. Start the engine.
2. Verify that the rods of the shutter valve actuator 1 and 2 are not pulled.
3. If the rods are pulled, do as follows.
a. Stop the engine.
SST NGS Connected To DLC-2:
b. Connect the Special Service Tools (SST)s New Generation Star (NGS) tester to data link connector 2.
c. Verify that diagnostic trouble code No. P1521 or P1522 is not displayed. If code No. P1521 or P1522 is shown, carry out troubleshooting of the code No. P1521, P1522.
d. If diagnostic trouble codes are not shown, do as follows.
I. Start the engine and run it at idle.
II. Turn the VRIS solenoid valve from ON to OFF by using the SIMULATION TEST function and check if operation sound of the valve is heard.
VRIS Shutter Valve Actuators:
III. If the operation sound is heard, check the following.
^ Shutter valve actuators
IV. If the operation sound is not heard, check the following.
^ VRIS solenoid valve
4. Position the vehicle on a chassis roller and shift the selector lever to D.
5. Check the rod operation under the following conditions.

Shutter Valve Operation:
6. Rod operation is not as specified, do as follows.
a. Stop the engine.
SST NGS Connected To DLC-2:
b. Install the SSTs.
c. Verify that diagnostic trouble code No. P1521 or P1522 is not displayed. If code No. P1521 or P1522 is shown, carry out troubleshooting of the code No. P1521, P1522.
d. If diagnostic trouble codes are not shown, do as follows.
I. Start the engine and run it at idle.
II. Turn the VRIS solenoid valve from ON to OFF by using SIMULATION TEST function and check if operation sound of the valve is heard.
III. If the operation sound is heard, check the following.
^ Loose or damaged vacuum hose
^ Shutter valve actuators
^ Throttle position sensor
IV. If the operation sound is not heard, check the following.
^ VRIS solenoid valve
