Catalytic Converter: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Perform this test if the vehicle fails a tail pipe emissions test and the "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" is off.

1. Check that the engine is in good mechanical working order. (Good compression, no vacuum leaks etc.)
2. Correct any ignition misfires.
3. Perform all of the basic adjustments (idle, timing, and fuel) and attain the correct specifications.
4. Retest for tail pipe emissions. If emissions remain high remove the catalytic converter and inspect for damage or signs of contamination. Replace the catalytic converter if necessary.
