Service Procedure

Figure 1:

SERVICE PROCEDURE - Vehicles Equipped With Air Conditioning

If the vehicle IS equipped with air conditioning, proceed as follows:

1. Inspect the engine for the presence of a four-point attachment rear brace from the power steering pump to the engine (see Figure 1, Item 1 - two attachments on the rear of the pump). If this brace exists, install Campaign Identification Label on the vehicle and return it to the customer.

2. If a three-point attachment rear brace is present (see Figure 1, Item 2 - only one attachment on the rear of the pump), then the power steering pump bracket should be replaced, and the three-point attachment rear brace should be replaced with a new four-point rear brace. ALL REPLACEMENT HARDWARE AND THE INSTRUCTIONS for installing the power steering pump bracketry for vehicles equipped with air conditioning, may be obtained by ordering the Service Package (P/N 10099904) from GMSPO. Install Campaign Identification Label when service package installation is complete.
SERVICE PROCEDURE - Vehicles NOT Equipped With Air Conditioning

If the vehicle IS NOT equipped with air conditioning replace the power steering pump bracket with a new bracket (P/N 10137045) and a new four-point rear brace (P/N 10078906) as follows:

1. Remove accessory drive belt.

2. Remove power steering pump pulley.

3. Remove power steering pump from the bracket.

4. Remove wire retainer attaching wiring harness to rear power steering pump brace and discard. Attach new wire retainer P/N 3816659 in approximately the same location on wire harness.

5. Remove power steering pump rear brace, (to be replaced with service brace P/N 10078906).

6. Remove lower bolt in rear of power steering pump. Replace with the new stud P/N 7831389 and torque to 40-60 N-m (30-45 ft.lbs.). Note: "Dog Point" (pilot) end of stud goes into pump which leaves shouldered end of stud outside of hex.

7. Assemble power steering pump to the new bracket and torque to 40-60 N-m (30-45 ft.lbs.) (3 existing bolts).

8. Loosely assemble new rear brace P/N 10078906 to the engine by placing brace over exhaust manifold stud, loosely assembling existing nut on the stud and loosely assembling existing bolt in the side of engine block.

9. Attach new wire retainer P/N 3816659 on harness to hole provided in new rear power steering pump brace. (Retainer should orientate wire harness properly so harness is not pinched between rear brace and rear of power steering pump when it is installed.)

SERVICE PROCEDURE (Continued)

10. Inspect threads in boss on water pump to which power steering pump bracket attaches. If threads are stripped, the water pump should be replaced. Reference 1987 Firebird Service Manual, Section 3B7 for water pump replacement.

11. Attach power steering pump and bracket assembly to engine while guiding pump rear studs into rear brace holes.

12. Torque existing bolt "A" (Figure 2) to water pump to 30-40 N-m (22-30 ft. lbs.) and torque existing bolt "B" (Figure 2) to cylinder head to 40-60 N-m (30-45 ft.lbs.).

13. Assemble one existing nut and new nut P/N 11508006 on rear of power steering pump at rear brace holes.

14. Torque nuts that secure the brace to rear of power steering pump to 40-60 N-m (30-45 ft.lbs.). Torque existing bolt and nut that secures brace to manifold stud and engine block to 30-40 N-m (22-30 ft.lbs.). Note: Make sure the rear brace is firmly against the rear of pump, exhaust manifold stud and the side of engine block when brace attachments are torqued.

15. Install power steering pump pulley. Front edge of pulley hub should be flush with end of shaft within +/- 0.25 mm.

16. Install accessory drive belt. Adjust to specifications.

17. Install campaign Identification Label.
