Transmission Replacement
Removal Procedure- Tools Required
- J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
- J 28467-90Engine Support Adapter
- J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set
- J 35944-A Oil Cooler and Line Flusher
1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
3. Install the J 28467-90.
4. Install the J 28467-A.
5. Install the J 36462.
6. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right) in Engine.
7. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transaxle and remove the wiring harness grounds.
8. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch. Refer to AT Range Selector Cable Replacement (AT PNP Switch).
9. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable from transaxle. Refer to AT Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
10. Remove the PNP switch. Refer to AT Range Selector Cable Replacement (AT PNP Switch).
11. Remove the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
12. Remove the power steering gear to frame retaining bolts. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
13. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
14. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
15. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
16. Remove the engine splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine in Body and Frame.
17. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
18. Remove the power steering gear from the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
19. Use wire to secure the power steering gear to the vehicle.
20. Remove the power steering cooler line clamps from the frame.
21. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine.
22. Remove the lower ball joints from the lower control arms. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
23. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
24. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
25. Remove the torque converter bolts.
26. Drain the transaxle fluid.
27. Remove the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle. Refer to AT Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.
28. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (Left) or Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (Right) in Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.
29. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle and struts.
30. Disconnect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to wheel speed sensor replacement Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Front) in Brakes and Traction Control.
31. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector.
32. Use the transaxle table to support the transaxle and frame.
33. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to AT Brace Replacement.
34. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
35. Remove the frame to body bolts. Refer to Body and Frame.
36. Lower the frame from the vehicle with transaxle suitably supported.
37. Lower the transaxle.
38. Refer to overhaul procedure.
39. Use the J 35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
- Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
- Flush the hoses.
- Flush the pipes.
- Refer to AT Oil Cooler Flushing.
Installation Procedure

1. Install the transaxle to the frame on the transaxle table.
2. Raise the transaxle and frame assembly to the vehicle.
3. Install the frame to body bolts. Refer to Body and Frame.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
- Tighten the lower transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to AT Brace Replacement.
6. Remove the transaxle table.
7. Connect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
8. Connect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Front) in Brakes and Traction Control.
9. Connect the drive axles to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (Left) or Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (Right) in Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.
10. Install the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle. Refer to AT Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.
11. Install the torque converter bolts.
- Tighten the torque converter bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
13. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
14. Install the lower ball joints to the lower control arms. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
15. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine.
16. Install the power steering cooler line clamps to the frame.
17. Install the power steering gear to the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
18. Install the power steering gear to frame retaining bolts. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
19. Install both the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
20. Install the engine splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine in Body and Frame.
21. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
22. Install the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
23. Remove the vehicle support.
24. Lower the vehicle.
25. Install the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2). and install the wiring harness grounds.
- Tighten the upper transaxle bolts and stud to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
26. Install the PNP switch. Refer to PNP Switch Replacement.
27. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable to transaxle. Refer to AT Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
28. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch. Refer to AT Range Selector Cable Replacement (AT PNP Switch).
29. Install the wiring harness connectors to the transaxle.
30. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right) in Engine.
31. Remove the J 36462.
32. Remove the J 28467-A.
33. Remove the J 28467-90.
34. Install the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
35. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
36. Adjust the toe-in, if required. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Steering and Suspension.
Notice: Do NOT overfill the transaxle. The overfilling of the transaxle causes foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints, and possible damage to the transaxle.
37. Adjust the fluid level.
38. Use the J 35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
- Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
- Flush the hoses.
- Flush the pipes.
- Refer to AT Oil Cooler Flushing.
39. Inspect for proper completion of the repairs.
40. Inspect for fluid leaks.
