Wheel Cylinder: Service and Repair
Wheel Cylinder ReplacementRemoval Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Clean any dirt or foreign material around the wheel cylinder assembly inlet and pilot.
4. Remove the brake pipe (2) from the wheel cylinder (1).
Important: Install a rubber cap or plug to the exposed brake pipe fitting end in order to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.
5. Plug the open brake pipe end.
6. Remove the brake drum.
7. Remove the brake shoes.
8. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.
9. Remove the wheel cylinder bolts.
10. Remove the wheel cylinder.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the wheel cylinder.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the wheel cylinder bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the wheel cylinder bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the hub and bearing assembly.
4. Install the brake pipe (2) to the wheel cylinder (1).
Tighten
Tighten the brake pipe nut to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the brake shoes.
6. Adjust the rear drum brakes.
7. Install the brake drum.
8. Bleed the wheel cylinder and then the complete brake system.
9. Adjust the park brake system.
10. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
11. Lower the vehicle.
