Removing and installing the viscous clutch
Preliminary work
1. Raise the vehicle at the specified jacking points.
2. Remove underbody panel.
3. Remove cardan shaft.
4. Remove front final drive.
5. Drain oil for front final drive.
Removing the viscous clutch
Overview

1. Clamp final drive in the vice with holding rails VW 457 -A-.
Clamping final drive
2. Unscrew fastening screws for long-neck pipe and remove long-neck pipe using a rubber hammer if necessary.
Long-neck pipe
3. Take off circlip -1- and remove support washer -2-.
4. Remove the viscous clutch -3-.
Installing the viscous clutch
1. Insert viscous clutch and fit support washer.
2. Position circlip -B- and drive into place using assembly aid P 9638 -A-.
Fitting circlip
3. Use new O-ring for long-neck pipe and coat with Vaseline.
4. Screw in fastening screws for long-neck pipe and tighten uniformly in diagonally opposite sequence.
Long-neck pipe
5. Remove holding rails VW 457.
Subsequent work
1. Install front final drive.
2. Fill in oil for front final drive.
3. Install cardan shaft.
4. Fit underbody panels.
5. Lower the vehicle.
