Telephone - NAM Programming and Troubleshooting Guide
Application: Late 1991 9000 CD Turbo Models
On late production 1991 CD Turbo models and 9000 Turbo models, VIN's M1012452- and M2008243-, a four-pin plug that is suitable as a power supply point for a cellular phone has been introduced into production. As part of a pilot program to evaluate the factory-installed cellular telephone concept, Saab may install a cellular mobile telephone on certain CD Turbo models. All telephone hardware will have been installed in the vehicle at the port-of-entry prior to dealership delivery. To avoid potential damage, the antenna mast will be placed in the glove box when transported from the port to your dealership. For retail delivery, the mast should be screwed onto the antenna base.
This bulletin provides an overview of the layout of the phone's hardware, a step by step procedure for programming the Numerical Assignment Module (NAM) for retail delivery, warranty registration card information, and a troubleshooting guide for diagnosing a hardware problem.
Phone Installation Layout
The Saab cellular phone system consists of a transceiver mounted to the underside of the rear parcel shell in the trunk, a handset that is mounted to an articulated presenter arm in the center console storage box, a hands-free microphone that is clipped to the rear view mirror and an antenna glued to the rear window.
A wiring harness that supplies power for the phone runs from a factory power plug in the center dash area (see April Tech Tips) along the center tunnel, back and then up the left rear wheel housing and connects to the transceiver. A separate "system" harness that connects the handset to the transceiver follows the same path as the power harness.
The hands-free microphone connects to the system harness via a cable that runs from the rear view mirror along the headliner over to the left A-pillar. It is then routed down the A-pillar, down to the sill, back (in the sill channel) to the harness crossing to the center console at the front edge of the driver's seat support frame. The microphone cable plugs into a fitting on the system cable.
The antenna cable is routed from the internal antenna base on the rear window up to the headliner, then over to the left C-pillar. It is fed through the C-pillar (and secured to avoid any contact with the seat belt reel) and down to the transceiver.
The factory wiring harness that supplies the power for the phone system terminates in a 4-pin plug in the center dash either in the area behind the tidy box or behind the radio/CD baskets. The colors of the three wires in the connector are: green/white in pin position 1 (switched power, fuse 13 in glovebox), black in pin position 2 (ground), and red in pin position 4 (B +, fuse 10 in engine compartment fuse box).
NAM Programming
Prior to delivering the car, the NAM must be programmed with the assigned phone number and operating parameters. This information will be sent/faxed to your dealership from GTE once the phone number has been assigned. Should any difficulties be encountered, GTE has an OEM Activation Group which can be reached toll free at 1-800-325-3825 to offer assistance and walk through the step-by-step procedure.
Accessing NAM Programming Mode
1. Turn the phone on.
2. Enter the following sequence on the keypad: * 3 0 0 1 # (security code) [SEL] 9
Note: 12345 is the factory preset security code. If "INSTALL" does not appear in the display, the access sequence was entered incorrectly or the wrong security code was used. Turn the phone off and return to step 1.
Selecting The Primary NAM
3. Press [END].
4. Verify that ""IDENTIF INFO PRI" or "IDENTIF INFO OPT" appears in the display.
5. Toggle between NAMs with the [SND] key until "IDENTIF INFO PRI"" is displayed and press [END].
Entering NAM Information
6. Enter the correct Home System ID on the numeric keypad and store by pressing [END].
7. Toggle to the correct Access Method with the [SND] key and press [END].
8. Toggle to the correct Local Option with the [SND] key and press [END].
9. Enter the correct mobile phone number followed by [END].

Note: The Information stored by steps 10-13 is identical in both the Primary NAM and the Optional NAM. Once this information is programmed into the Primary NAM, it is not necessary to reprogram the information for the Optional NAM.
Note: Always give the Security Code from step 10 to the owner of the phone. The owner will require this number for any future servicing of the phone.
15. Enter the desired Security Code followed by [END].
16. 1 Date is the date of manufacture and cannot be changed. Press [END] to continue.
17. Enter the current date (format: mmddyy) for 2 Date and press [END].

NOTE
After the phone has been programmed, the first call must be made within the phone's home system. If a call is made outside of the home system first, access will be denied and the service for the assigned phone number will have to be re-established with the home carrier.
If NAM programming questions arise, GTE can offer assistance or answer questions through their toll free number 1-800-325-3825.
Warranty Registration Card
When a car is delivered with a mobile phone installed, it is most important that the warranty registration card that is in the glove box be filled out. Write the date of cellular mobile telephone activation (date of vehicle sale), the car's VIN, the customer's name and address, the mobile telephone number assigned by GTE, the Saab dealer's name and address, and the cellular mobile telephone serial number. Send in the completed card to the Saab Warranty Department. Note that the auto in-service date and warranty expiration date will be completed by Saab.
