SUBJECT:
On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Improvements-Scan Tool Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) Readiness Status for Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S/O2S) will not Indicate "Ready" (Install Updated Engine Control Module (ECM) Calibration if Required)
MODELS AFFECTED:
2002 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with 4-Cylinder (L61) engines and manual transaxles (RPO MG3) built up to and including VIN 2S812653
CONDITION:
Some Saturn retail technicians or independent repair facilities may comment that the I/M System Status for HO25/O2S will always indicates "Not Ready"
CAUSE:
The I/M monitor for HO2S/O2S is not active in the current ECM calibration.
CORRECTION:
Reprogram the ECM on all affected vehicles, as identified above including vehicles in new Retailer inventory and any that return for service during the warranty coverage period. To verify if an updated calibration is required refer to the following procedure in this bulletin.
IMPORTANT:
Before installing new ECM calibration, make sure the Service Stall System (SSS) version is 10.5 or greater.
PROCEDURE:
NOTICE:
You must view calibration numbers using the TECH 2 and NOT the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS).
1. Connect Scan Tool to the vehicle.
2. Navigate to the 2.2L (VIN D) Powertrain Menu.
3. Select I/M SYSTEM INFORMATION.
4. Select VEHICLE INFORMATION.
5. Read CALIBRATION ID.
^ If ECM calibration ID number is 12221210 or 12221211, reprogram the ECM to install the updated calibration. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.
^ If ECM calibration ID number is not 12221210 or 12221211, do not reprogram the ECM. The updated calibration is already installed and reprogramming is not required. Refer to "Diagnostics" in the Engine/Emission Controls (4-Cylinder) section of the 2002 VUE Powertrain Electrical Diagnostics Service Manual for further diagnostic information.
