Band Apply Servo: Service and Repair

FORWARD/REVERSE SERVO PISTON (ON-VEHICLE)
TOOLS REQUIRED
- SA9137T Servo Piston Seal Installer
- SA9143T Input Shaft Seal Installer

REMOVAL





1. Remove end cover.
2. Remove the 1st clutch, 1st drive gear, and 1st driven gear.
3. Remove valve body.
4. Remove the forward/reverse servo piston cover bolts, remove cover, servo piston spring, servo piston bolt, and shift fork.

INSTALLATION

IMPORTANT: Prior to using Servo Piston Seal Installer SA9143T inspect the tool for any nicks or burrs that could damage the forward/reverse servo piston seal.

1. Obtain tool Servo Piston Seal Installer SA9137T.





2. Install forward/reverse servo piston seal if necessary.
2.1 Place servo piston on Seal Installer Backup Base SA9137T-2 (3).
2.2 Install Expander Cone SA9137T-1 (2) to servo piston.
2.3 Lube seal and position on expander cone.

NOTICE: Lube seal with Saturn Transaxle Fluid before installation.

2.4 Use seal pusher Input Shaft Seal Installer SA9143T(1) to install seal.
2.5 Place servo piston on seal sizer Holding Base SA9137T-4 (2).
2.6 Size seal by placing Sizing Ring SA9137T-3 (1) over piston, with large internal diameter down, until it bottoms out on work table.

IMPORTANT: Be sure not to install the Forward/Rev fork upside down. Refer to illustration for reference.





3. Lube the inside diameter of the Forward/Rev fork and slide the Forward/Rev fork onto the Forward/Reverse Dog clutch sleeve.

IMPORTANT: Prior to installing the servo piston, thoroughly lube the following components with Saturn Transaxle Fluid:
- Servo piston shaft
- Case bore where the piston will be installed.





4. Insert the Forward/Rev servo piston into the bore and line up fork and servo shaft as servo is pushed in. Before pushing the servo all the way in, align bolt hole in servo with hole in fork. The chamfered hole should face towards the case opening.
5. Clean bolt threads and apply Loctite 242(r) Thread locker (P/N 21485277) (or equivalent) on bolt threads.
Install fork to servo piston bolt and torque.
Torque:
Forward/Reverse Shift Fork-to-Forward/Reverse Servo Piston Bolt: 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)
7. Install servo spring.

NOTICE: Clean and lubricate fasteners with Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid and install.

8. Install servo cover O-ring to cover and install cover.
Torque two bolts.
Torque:
Forward/Reverse Servo Piston Cover-to-Case Bolts: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
9. Install valve body.
10. Install the 1st clutch, 1st drive gear, and 1st driven gear.
11. Install end cover.
