Owner Letter

Dear Subaru Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Subaru of America, Inc. has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1981 and 1982 Model Year Subaru passenger vehicles. Only manual transmission vehicles equipped with a maintenance free battery are affected. The defect involves the electrical system of the vehicles and is a result of the front wiring harness rubbing against the battery hold down rod.

Vehicles exhibiting this condition may develope an electrical short and, if let unattended, overheating of the wiring harness may occur which could result in a fire in the engine compartment.

In order to remedy this condition your vehicle will be inspected and the front wiring harness will be repaired, if necessary. In addition, protective covers will be installed, as shown in Figure 1, on the front wiring harness and on the battery hold down rod to prevent any future problems. THE PROTECTIVE COVERS AND SECURING STRAPS ARE INCLUDED WITH THIS LETTER AND ARE TO BE TAKEN WITH YOUR VEHICLE TO YOUR SUBARU DEALER FOR INSTALLATION.

Upon receipt of this letter contact your Subaru dealer to schedule an appointment. The time required to perform this repair is approximately 10 minutes.

You must present the enclosed two-part Recall Certification/Repair Order Form to your Subaru dealer at the time this inspection and repair procedure is performed. If you lose this form, please contact the Customer Relations Department of the Subaru Distributor in your area at the address listed on the reverse side of this letter. You will then be sent a new form. If you are no longer in possession of this vehicle please complete the enclosed prepaid postcard and mail it to us so that we my update our records.

This inspection and repair procedure performed by your Subaru Dealer will be at no charge to you.

If your dealer fails or is unable to remedy this condition without charge and within a reasonable period of time, you should contact the Subaru distributor responsible for you area. The addresses and telephone numbers of the Subaru distributors are listed on the reverse side of this letter. If your complaint is not resolved, you may contact Subaru of America, Customer Relations Department at the above address or you may wish to notify the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20590 or call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline at 800-424-9393 (Washington, D.C. area residents may call 426-0123).

We regret any inconvenience this matter may cause you. However, we have taken this action in the interest of your safety and your continued satisfaction with our products.

WE URGE YOU TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO HAVE THIS INSPECTION AND REPAIR PROCEDURE PERFORMED.
