Shock Absorber - Air Purging Procedure

84subaru1 NUMBER 05-14-84

DATE 03-29-84

APPLICABILITY: ALL SUBARU MODELS

SUBJECT: SHOCK ABSORBER AIR REMOVAL

Shock absorbers stored horizontally may allow air to pass into the hydraulic fluid chamber. To check for air in a shock absorber follow the steps listed below.

FIGURE 3:

1) CHECKING PROCEDURE FOR AIR IN SHOCK ABSORBERS

Check the free play of the shock absorber by holding it in an upright position as shown in Figure 3.

NOTE: Free play is determined when the shock absorber is held upright in a fully extended position, and the upper section is pushed downward slightly until resistance is felt from the hydraulic fluid.

a) If the free play is 10 mm or less, the shock absorber can be installed on the vehicle without purging.
b) If the free play is more than 10 mm, the shock absorber must be purged using the following procedure.

FIGURE 1:

2) AIR REMOVAL PROCEDURE

1) When holding the shock absorber upside down, compress it fully as shown in Figure 1.

FIGURE 2:

2) While the shock absorber is still compressed, turn it upright. (See Figure 2)

FIGURE 3:

3) Fully extend the shock absorber as shown in Figure 3.
4) Repeat the above steps (1 through 3) 3 to 5 times.

If, after going through the above steps, the shock absorber still has air in it, replace it with a new one.
